Green Card Granted Through VAWA

August 24, 2025

When the government insisted our client had entered the U.S. illegally, it seemed like his case was already lost. But by proving both the truth of his entry and the abuse he endured, we secured a life-changing victory.

Challenge

Our client was placed in removal proceedings after the Department of Homeland Security claimed he entered the United States without authorization. On top of this, he faced the trauma of an abusive marriage to a U.S. citizen, suffering both physical and psychological harm.

Our Strategy

We proved that our client had in fact been lawfully admitted — he was waved in by car and inspected at the border, despite DHS’s objections otherwise. Once we established his legal entry, we pursued protection through the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), presenting evidence of the abuse he suffered at the hands of his U.S. citizen spouse.

Result

The Immigration Judge granted adjustment of status, and our client became a lawful permanent resident of the United States.

Takeaway

Even when the government challenges the legality of an entry, or when abuse makes life feel hopeless, relief is still possible. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) offers a powerful path to protection and stability for survivors — and with the right advocacy, a green card is within reach.
